About Johnsie

Johnsie McSwain 185x300 About JohnsieI’m Johnnsie McSwain, the human partner of the Carolina Bed Bug Dog scent team. I’m a certified Project Management Professional and K9 Handler.

I founded Carolina Bed Bug Dog, also known as K9Sleuth Services Inc. in 2011 to help prevent bed bug infestation, educate the public regarding the pests and provide early detection of bed bugs. My trusted partner is a professionally trained Dachshund-Beagle named Abby. Abby was rescued from a shelter in Alabama and trained as my partner by a Master Trainer at FSI Kennel.

Before launching this business, I had a successful 20-year career in IT and held positions in IT management, project management and database management. When I decided to go solo, I was acting on a lifelong interest in wanting to work with a canine and giving back to my community. So, I researched extensively and acquired the necessary training, namely in pesticide and bed bug remediation, small business setup and operation and trained with Abby as a scent team.  I then self-funded the business and Abby and I have been inseparable since.

Abby and I work together to minimize the impact of bed bugs by helping families and businesses manage early detection and prevention. We provide fast, accurate and confidential service to residential, commercial and government clients and work closely with other pest management professionals.

We are certified together as a Canine Scent Team, specializing in bed bug scent. I’m a certified member of the Bed Bug Detection Canine Team and registered as a Pest Control Technician in NC. Credentialed by the World Detector Dog Organization, our team trains on a daily basis to keep our skills sharp. Carolina Bed Bug Dog is a certified HUB business in NC, and a Woman Owned Business listed in State and Federal vendor databases.   We have also trained as a scent team with Joe Nick K-9 Training in New Jersey.

When I’m not out ridding the world of bed bugs, I enjoy outdoor activities such as camping, tennis, walking trails, and taking Abby to the park.  I support animal rescue groups in a variety of ways and walk dogs for residents at a local assisted living facility.

Technology is a vital part of my business, so I invest time in technology-related education, small business classes and social media. I’m continuing my education in pest management and horticulture in the area of Turf Management.

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Information Systems from Winthrop University. I’m also a founding member of the International Bed Bug Resource Authority.
